The story So Far

The story so far from the beginnings in 1991 to the present.
After first visiting Romania in 1991 Ben White met Iacob and Lidia Murza who, in response to the death of their four year old niece in an accident, had started a charity named after her. In Lidia’s own words:
‘It is wonderful to truly have a hope, to be sure that it doesn’t all end with this life. To believe that there is a God who leads the universe, that what happens to you is not unknown to him, that He loves you and wants your best, even though in moments of pain, you do not understand why things happen.’
That is how the BENITA Christian Camp was born. A simple wooden cabin in the midst of nature and surrounded by fruit trees and ornamental trees. From that time on every summer many children from families that cannot afford to send them to expensive camps, or from the orphanage come and learn about God’s wonderful love and hear the message of salvation. Ben spread the word about the work and many people from the north Kent area contributed money, gifts and even a car! By now a small group had formed and had visited Romania and Benita. A meeting was held at TEC in October 2005 and the group explained their experiences in Romania and what they hoped could be done to help the extremely poor families they had met. During the evening the beauty of the country and friendliness of the people were described as were the terrible conditions in which some of the families were living.

Named ‘Project Hector’ at this time (after a puppet taken to the Benita Kindergarten by the group) the plan was to buy houses and make them habitable. They would then be rented or sold to needy families. Eventually this was to prove difficult to manage and not cost effective and so it was decided to provide funds which would used to improve the homes of poor families ie. make them weatherproof or when necessary, to build simple one or two roomed houses in the style of local housing.
